These props are still a work in progress. I’ve been researching different kingdom/monarchy traits to get a feel of how I want this environment to read, though I still haven’t really reached an “a-ha” moment on this one. Still working out the kinks.
Children’s illustration has never really been a focus of mine, though it always seems to find its way to me somehow. I thought I’d try incorporating a children’s market kind of style and character. Though, it’s still very heavily my approach to it.
I based this little girl on the daughter of one of my mom’s coworkers. I’m always hearing stories about her being all smart and creative. She’s a bit sassy too, so I’ve heard. I think it’ll be interesting to create a little room environment for this character. I imagine she’s like a messy-organized type.
Featuring some character traits and a rough design of a police officer with whom she has a bit of trouble. He’ll be another important character in the final animation I’m working on with them. I’m definitely excited to get a nice pastel color palette laid out for them (my little cop dude still needs some more color studies).

I still haven’t quite settled on a name for this character, but we’re calling her Bee for now. Bee is actually a part of an animated short I’ll be working on for the next several months - and it’s a comedy! She’s a pretty sweet, carefree individual. She works a full-time job and likes to party with her friends in her free time. Typically, she’s pretty chill, but her biggest peeves are rude customers and bugs … pretty much all of the bugs. You may see her pop up again as I’ll be doing quite a bit with her for the next 7-8 months or so.
This is La. She never goes anywhere without her music, and she dreams of one day becoming a great composer. One day she falls asleep in the train station and wakes up to find that she’s been transported to a strange new world. The trains become music notes traveling along the measures that were once old, rusty train tracks. As she explores this musical world in wonder, she desires more and more to stay. As the train slows to stop in front of her, she hesitates to get on and let the music carry her away.
For her design, I played a lot with the idea of using musical notes as the overall shape of her form. Something about them is also very free and wispy, while also seeming a bit fragile. That fragility translates well into La’s character, as I imagine she’s very shy about her passion for music.
